What is OSINT?

O.S.I.N.T. stands for Open-Source Intelligence Techniques. OSINT is described several different ways. According to Wikipedia, OSINT is defined as:

“Open-source intelligence is the collection and analysis of data gathered from open sources to produce actionable intelligence. OSINT is primarily used in national security, law enforcement, and business intelligence functions and is of value to analysts who use non-sensitive intelligence in answering classified, unclassified, or proprietary intelligence requirements across the previous intelligence disciplines.”

What does OSINT mean in layman terms?

OSINT can be simplified as utilizing social media sites, search engines, locate people services -and-research tools, much like what is used in our Background Checks, to locate individuals. Utilizing open-source applications like Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Telegram and Dark Web websites and search engines that are accessible to the general public. Utilizing those tools and knowing how to stitch together dispirit pieces of information together to tell as close to an accurate story as possible, about an individual’s background.

A private investigator does not “hack” anybody’s social media account. Hacking an individual’s social media, email or any other type of accounts is a federal crime. However, private investigators can view all public postings on social media to collect relevant information.

How do we use this information?

Locating people can be difficult. Especially, if they don’t want to be found. Most people have some kind of online social media presence. We can use that information in addition to other pub record databases to locate somebody. However, when that person does not want to be found, they will not have a Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, or other social media accounts. By utilizing OSINT skills combined with public records searches and augmented with pay services we can find a person’s utility bill, mortgage or address. This is then expanded on and validated to locate the individual. Additionally, we have access to top-of-the-line locate people services information. These are not the cheesy, outdated and cheap services like Been Verified or Spokeo where you pay $30, or more, for outdated and inaccurate information. We have contracted with LexisNexis and pay for access to the same information used by large companies, federal agencies, local law enforcement agencies and other investigation services.
